Re: How do you cure R.I. in Ball Pythons?
I have to say 3 out of 3 times they always prescribe Baytril. I've never heard of different types of RI's. Any1 care to throw a link on where I can read such different RI's?

If you take your snake to the vet and they go with baytril injections, be prepared to see some burns on your snake. My retic was weezing so I took her in just to be sure and had them go ahead with the shots and a few days later she had a nasty burn that looked like her scales had melted away. Needless to say I freaked out but they're already healing well and should be gone by the next shed cycle. I'll post pics if anyone's interested. But I have to agree with everyone else. Go to the vet just to make sure. The initial cost of my appointment was 65.00 and the shot was 22.00 a piece, she required 3 shots 48 hours apart from each other.

actually that's interesting to know. Do you mean it was kind of a burn on her skin under the scales, where the shot had been given, Twist?
I saw on sSnakeSs.com that someone was feeding their sav. monitor baytril...it was perscribed that way by the vet. I wonder if that can be done with snakes, instead of shots...? Anyone?

There's an oral form of baytril as well but from what I've gathered the injections are more potent. Here's a pic of the burn site.

Common RIs are caused by bacteria.
Bacteria can be gram positive or gram negative. Even within those classifications, different bacteria are sensitive to some antibiotics and resistant to others.
There is a growing resistance to baytril because it is not only over-prescribed, but alsovprescribed without first checking to see whether or not it is the most effective option.

I have given oral meds to two snakes before, one being a gaboon, which was quite interesting. My herp vet prefers oral to injections as there are some side effects ( i.e. burning of the skin ). But whichever is given to you, you will most likely need an extra set of hands.
As everyone else has mentioned, definitely bump your temps up a bit and keep it dry until you are able to get into the vet.
