Pewter Male - What can i breed to produce unique morph

    Hi All,

I'm a herp breeder from the old days. Bred Kings, Corns, Boas, etc. I went to the show in Westchester last Sunday and the # of outstanding Ball Python Morphs was mind blowing. When I left the hobby in 1989 or so - there was nothing in BP"S. Always liked ball-Pyth but at the time it was difficult finding them captive raised. So, my first BP, purchased a few days ago is a Pewter male (130 grams) - Really nice. I want to pick up a few females and start he process again. Got the itch! I'm looking for suggestions on what to breed him with where I would be able to produce exceptional morphs. I know it's personal preference. I'm attracted to contrast - Killer Yellows and the such. Albinos, pieds and many others. Any thoughts, suggestions?

    Mike

I would look into a pewter female for super pewters.

If the cinny gene passes on to any of the young you won't get anything with killer yellows, but you could start some long term projects by getting a pied female and working towards pewter pieds or an albino for an albino pewter.

You could also get a super pastel female (or even just a pastel female) and have a shot at more pewters, sterlings (super pastel cinny), super pastels, pastels and cinnies. For killer yellows, pastel yellow bellies can be really nice as adults or fireflies (fire pastel) are amazing. Pastel spotnoses also seem to be pretty yellow.

I'm partial to the lesser cinnies, butter cinny crosses after seeing Crawly's Mom post her's. But those aren't very yellow.

I suggest playing around with this to see if there is anything that you are really interested in.

Thanks for the input. When you say Albino - normal Albino or would you suggest a different morph?

I would probably go with a normal albino. The lavender albino is really nice, but cost significantly more (but if you have the money go for it ). There is also the caramel albino which has been known to produce kinked babies but it's still a really nice morph, it doesn't really look like a typical albino, it's caramel colored.

You could always go with something like a bumble bee female. Then you would have a chance at super pastels, killer bees, pewter bees, sterling pastels, sterling bees, lordy that sounds like fun even to me!! Could have some amazing babies.

Glad Sinatra could inspire you, Kinra! He is a very pretty boy. I am very proud of him.

That's also a good idea. Can't go wrong with a nice bumble bee.

Producing a butter cinny is very high on my list of breeding projects. I love staring at your avatar.

When it comes to the cinnamon gene I'm a huge fan of what they do when mixed with yellow bellies and hypos, add the pastel gene that comes with pewter and you are on your way too some amazing looking offspring. On the other hand you can't go wrong with a cinny or pewter albino.

Re: Pewter Male - What can i breed to produce unique morph

I have 2.0 Pewters and 0.2 bumble bees for a reason......One of my pewters is a cinni and the other is a black pastel. Just to see what the differences might be when paired with the bumble bee girls. I have a bumble bee male and two cinni females for a similiar reason also.
Too many snakes to list. Ball pythons, Gtp's and Boa's. It easier to say it that way.

I went with Black Pewter because I tend to like the Black Pastel Crosses and patterns better then the Cinni. I'm throwing a Hypo BP or Hypo Black pewter male to her when she is big enough. At 3 months and 350 grams that shouldn't be all that long.

I think the sterlings and sterling bees are just something you do not see enough of. They are unique and very nice pairings in my opinion. I would go that route if I had a pewter male, besides Bees are just good in general to have around. There are a lot of different morphs you can make with a bee female if you get what you want with the pewter right away, you can switch her up the following season with another male to get some more interesting results.

I may beat you to it! I have two normal breeding weight females sitting in waiting for Sinatra to get up to weight. So fingers crossed if he keeps eating he may be ready in 6-8 months to be paired up. So if I get lucky I might come out with some beautiful lesser cinny babies in the next year-year and a half.
