I'm using them in my homemade rack. I have no problems with them, but mine slide out sideways...

ive just started using them so i dont have too much input but my snakes always stay towards the back thats supported so i havent head a problem with the flimsiness.
It's pretty simple really the sides are 1x4s and the shelves are melamine. Just cut your melamine to size and then put a tub on one shelf with a couple CDs for spacers and then another shelf on top of that and just screw it all together as you go. If you want you can pm me questions or email me at scott@amonrareptiles.com I'll do what I can to walk you through it.
I use both the rubbermaid and sterile lite in my racks but I also built mine to keep the lid on ( rather scratch up the lid on a screw tip or something than injury the snake more if squeezed out some( rolling the sking or rug burn type spot )

I use 41 quart rubbermaid tubs in my boaphile rack. I wish they were taller, but no real complaints. however, you're correct in that they are not very sturdy. since I have my largest four snakes in that rack, I decided to scrap everything heavy, and I have since converted to using only RBI lightweight plastic hides and deli cup water bowles supported by 4'' PVC couplers.
