    Around here, they simply don't... if you (or your partner/spouse) are not a well-paid professional or independently wealthy, you just have to rent indefinitely or buy a small apartment in an iffy neighborhood. I went to a mortgage specialist a few years back, when I was earning around $55K/yr and working in a bad neighborhood - qualified for like $250K, which would have gotten me a 1br in the slightly nicer part of that high-crime area. So I just continued renting, as probably 60-70% of people here do. As my father often says, you can't always get what you want when you want it!
