3 in is good I hear the lower wattage heats just fine though and it is safer(doesn't get as hot if your thermo gets stuck on) Also check shipping prices I've found the reptile basics usually costs me $5 more to ship to me then bean farm, but location also plays a big part in that the closest seller will have cheapest shipping costs.
