Well I just got backed into a corner....

I have a neighbor who lives down our street who had a friend who needed him to keep his BP for him for awhile (IDK the reason) and he agreed. My boyfriend is buddies with this neighbor and we have gone over there to grill out a few times in the past. The last time that we went over there was probably about 4 months ago. They had the BP in a tank, no hide, no water, no heat. So I explained that they should give him a hide and I cut one out of a shoebox for him. I haven't seen the snake again. Since then, the neighbor and his wife have separated. The neighbor came over today, after going to see his kids, to hang out with my boyfriend. He asked me if I wanted his friend's BP (IDK what happened or why the friend never came and got it). I don't really want him so I said "noooooo not right now". I left the room and that was that. Shortly after, I went back to ask something and the neighbor says, "Look, Jess, I'm going to bring this snake over to you today, I don't want it. And if you aren't going to take it, I'm going to take it out to Malabar (further into the middle of nowhere than I already live) and let it go or make a belt out of it." This of course ticks me off so my response is that he can bring it over to me. After I agree, he tells me thank god that I did because it needs to be fed because his wife hasn't fed it in three months!

    .................

Good thing I have small rats in the freezer.

One of two things can happen out of this..................

#1- you give him a good home

#2- you can find him a good home

Either way..............the snake wins and you feel better about yourself

Yup, we have taken in animals that we really didn't need or want, but it was the best for them. You got this, Jess. You'll be glad you did it.

He's very handsome. He's super blue right now and I just put him in a tub. The tank that he brought him over in was disgusting It had urates and feces everywhere. I'm happy I agreed, he had to be miserable. I'll post a pic of him soon.

Wow that's insane. Luckily the snake who is going to someone that actually knows how to take care of it =/

No water or hides or anything...I can't imagine what the poor thing must be going through.

#1 and #2 apply, unless the snake is ill and you rack up a large unexpected vet bill, or worse, the illness spreads to your other snakes.

If you're practicing strict quarentine, and the snake plumps up and is healthy(despite his ill treatment) then the snake and you are better off. No bad keeping for the snake, and no wondering if the snake is being cared for for you. Good on both ends.

Ball Pythons are remarkably hardy and 3 months isn't such a long time that I'd be particularly worried. The lack of heat would worry me more. If you read the threads on here you'll see snakes that have gone on voluntary hunger strikes for longer than 3 months with little to no ill effect. I'm sure he'll do well with his new CARING RESPONSIBLE owner and you should have no issues placing him into a good home if you chose not to keep him forever.

Yes, pics will be good. I'm sure glad you got him. I know how frustrating it can be to be backed in to a corner like that, but you're helping an animal that really needs it. Good for you!

He doesn't seem to be ill and is a good spirited little guy Especially for the muck he was living in. I had to wipe him with a towel when I took him from the tank because it was so gross. He's definitely going into QT. For a new hobbyist, I think I am pretty good with QT, I still have a snake in QT from May!! LOL
