Aquarium Screening
I am almost done setting up my next aquarium setup - 36x12x18 - And am making a custom lid for it as the lip is old fashioned and meant for a specific glass aquarium lid, therefore commercial screen tops don't fit. Anyhow, I had a question about the mesh people use for screening. The only kind of mesh screening I could find was 1/8 of an inch spaced. I've got 5 frickin' feet of the stuff, so I want to know if this is suitable for my ball python. Are the holes too big, and do they pose any risk, harm-wise? Fyi, it's galvanized steel wiring.
The commercial lid I have on my 10 gallon uses 1/16 of an inch spacing.

1/8th inch expanded metal should be fine, my commercial screen top is about that. It won't rust since it is galvanized so my only concern would be that it might have sharp edges. If it doesn't you should be good I think

you will get more surface area and it will hold humidity better. Personally it would take less time and effort to build and work better than a screen lid.
my 2¢

Thanks. I don't feel that it's sharp; I have it all set up so I'm good to go.
I would've opted in for plexiglass earlier because the general idea behind it is better, however when I started I felt my idea was both the quickest and easiest; plus, I'm terrible at crafting and both lack the tools and skill to build something more.

ruler and box cutter and a basic drill is all I used. Not very hard really I don't have tons of free time so everything is quick. I just wanted to offer a second option.

I have the frame completed and stained (Matches the lips of the tank nicely), which looks rather pleasing with the handles I have on it. I'm just going to incorporate bungee cords to strap it down as I don't feel like constructing a custom lock.
I've spent some time thinking about it and I'll probably go with the plexiglass. Although that was $20 of non-returnable screen, I might find something else to do with it. How much does plexiglass go for at Home Depot? I need just under 36x12.
