I've been feeding my roaches my recipe for years also, albeit, I use dog food instead of cat food, mainly fOr the price difference.
Powdered milk is great as a calcium source and it's way cheaper than using repcal or zoomed or whatever. Plus, my supermarket gives me what I call "pet store deals". The produce guy holds back the greens that are to be thrown out, and the manager gives me a huge discount on broken package powdered milk. Another reason not to shop walmart! Of course it doesn't hurt that he has a bearded dragon and raises roaches as well!

You are lucky, a lot of grocery stores I know have rules against giving away damaged goods. Reptile lovers have others backs! I did not know that's why people used powdered milk, thanks. I will give that a try. The Purina cat food I got was cheaper than the dog food at the store I go, not by much, it took me awhile to decide.

Cat food has more protein, but for feeders, I use he cheapest dog food(doggie bag). Just for roaches, crickets and mealworms.
Yet another way to save money, I buy the broken bags at tractor supply for a discount.

how fine are you grinding your roach chow up? I have just chucked in whole dog food, oats, cereal. I also supplement with fresh fruit and veggies. They really knock out oranges.

I just put it into a blender until it all mixes well. It's pretty fine with some small chunks. I used to use whole cheap dog food as well. When I switched to the ground stuff they seemed to eat more of it. That's why I decided to go this route again.
