The UTH is attached to the bottom outside of the tank. The probe is under the bedding right above the UTH. I'm using this mulch which is cypress something. A breeder recommended it. It holds humidity like when I mist it. But the screen cover & head light aren't killing it.

Today I didn't use the heat lamp cause the bulb is broke. Cold side was 72 & hot side was 83. UTH was 92.
My temps vary a lot too. Ball pythons are very resilient creatures. In my opinion, as long as the hot side stays warm enough at night (>80), the snake will stay warm. Some people even let their temps dip at night.
