Motley??

Hi guys, I am talking with a person on CL that lives just down the road from me and is offering up a female redtail for re-homing. Anyway, he sent me a pic, and I just cant get the thought of motley out of my mind...it just doesn't look like any normal redtail I have seen....



I know the pic is a crappy cell pic, but its all I got until I go see it tomorrow. When I go see it are there any tell tale signs I should be looking for when I go to see it in person, or are my new un-trained eyes just getting the best of me?!?!

EDIT: I guess that I see its not fully encased circles on its back so no motely, but it still doesn't look like a normal to me....maybe I am just crazy!

Ok now that we have established that I am indeed an idiot, how much would she be worth? She is from a local breeder, and not het anything just a good old fashioned female redtail (I am still confused as to how to tell if she is a BCC or BCI.

The shape of the head, the shape of the saddles, and the color of the tail, all indicate BCI to me. Here is the link to a write-up I did on the differences. Hope it helps.

Wow that helps so much! Thank you! So any idea on a fair price...I bought her for $80 including a 55 gallon tank and accessories for the tank...did I do ok?

Also I am thinking about selling my balls and just breeding boas...anyone with experience with either have thoughts on that??

Yes, the tank and accessories were probably close to that price, so you pretty much got her for free.

I used to breed balls, and now breed almost exclusively boas. IMO, balls are boring. They look nice, but hide all the time. I also had a lot of trouble getting balls to take f/t. Boas, on the other hand, are the total opposite. They are pretty fun to breed too. Live birth is a pretty awesome experience. The only downfall, they don't sell nearly as quickly as balls. Balls fly off the shelves, while you may have to sit on boas longer.

Breeding boas requires a bit of thought on which way you want to go. Generally, the more you get into boas, you will find yourself belonging to one of two groups, the "Morphists" or the "Purists." The Morphist will breed to produce existing morphs or possibly something new. The Purist has a more conservationalist approach. Due to naturally small/diminishing populations, habitat destruction, and in some cases, an "endangered" status, they breed to preserve the pure, or natural, bloodlines of locality specific boas in captivity.
