zoo med reptibator

hey guys,

I have the "opportunity" to purchase a zoo med incubator for $80.00 -
what are your feelings about it? I know there's a general consensus regarding zoo med products but it would be nice to hear from someone who has used this incubator.

i would but i dont know enough about it, i plan on getting one when i start breeding, if i dont find something better

I have never used one personally, but I have heard very little good about them. Most people say they are crap. It would probably work ok for corn snakes or a similar species that doesn't require "perfect" incubation, but if you're playing with higher end balls, I would spring for a little better or make your own.

Not the best for snake eggs ive noticed.

Works best for geckos,lizards and some colubrid eggs.

Heres my advice. If your breeding 80 dollar snakes then an 80 dollar incubator is fine. I wouldnt pinch pennies on incubation. If i were you id spend whatever it takes to have a good incubation setup. What i did was build a walk in incubator out of the closet in my snake room. It was very easy to do. I lined the walls and cieling with 3/4 inch exterior hard foam sheets from home depot. Then i installed the whire closet shelving. I use an oil filled space heater for heat source. I have a small fan that runs constantly for circulation. I also keep a 5 gallon bucket half filled on the floor for humidity. Under the bucket i have a heat pad to keep the water warm. I used a slab door and cut a big window hole and put plexi glass over it so i can check on things without ipening the door too much. I use a helix for my thermostat and i put the probe directlly in an egg box with the same mixture of substrate as if their were eggs in it. It has worked perfect for the past 5 years. Never lost a clutch in it yet. I can incubate as many clutches as can be produced here.

When it comes down to it, you get what you pay for.

I wouldn't incubate anything I cared very much about in a zoomed incubator. If you've got a normal x normal clutch and you don't have any emotional attachment to the eggs, then why not give it a shot?

To be honest though, I wouldn't be surprised if the guy who's selling it has figured out that it's a piece of junk and is now doing his best to get rid of it. If you plan on keeping the thing and using it later, I'd recommend you just build your own incubator.

I built mine out of a rockstar energy drink display fridge that I got off of craigslist for $60, a basic herpstat and some heat cable. All together it probably cost me about $150 and I expect to get a lot of use out of it. :-)

I once had someone give me a hard time when they found out I had about $300 invested in my incubator setup. He laughed at me and said he had made an incubator for his corn snakes for only $20. I opened the incubator and showed them the 40+ eggs inside of it.

As he stood there amazed by the size of the python eggs and the number of eggs I asked him a simple question... "if you knew you had $10,000 worth of eggs would YOU use your corn snake incubator? Me neither."

To answer the op... No. Don't cheap out on the incubator. Build one yourself, and build it well. Hatch one good egg and it will pay for itself.

Like ash said check craigslist for any type of drink fridge. You can find glass fron coke disply fridges that dont work for like 100 bucks and just ad heat and stat
