My set up

I gave up breeding these a while back because they grew so slow. After having lots of babies on the ground and not being able to find live mouse hoppers, I decided that was a good trait and have just restarted a colony. So far, I have six trios and two growing up. The big bins in the bottom are for grow out tubs. I also have a tupperware tub rack, but these are much much easier to clean out.

I don't have any in the grow out tubs yet. However, when I raised them before, I just separated them by sex and didn't have any fights. I normally had three grow out tubs. One for weaned and once they got big enough to sex without mistakes, then they go into either one for females or the other for males.

Seperate your females from your males to grow out... Usually takes care of 90% of the meanies..

I bought them at critter-cages and they are lab tubs. I've done the tupperware and aquariums before and these are SOOOOO much easier to clean out and use, that I'm going to buy probably ten more.

wow, they are pretty expensive.
One of those things you wouldnt have to buy often but holy crap it would be quite a bit to even get a good colony going. Ill have to keep this in mind for my future purchases.

You could also do a similar setup with glass tanks.

Yes, they are a little pricy but I've learned to get the right tool for the job. I think after I get the racks full of the lab tubs, I'm going to add a watering system.

If you don't want to spend this kind of money, then glass tanks will work well. I just found them a pain to clean and bulkier than needed. I also found these easier to work with and less bulky than cement tubs. I can clean out the entire rat setup in about 20 minutes. That to me, makes it worth the price.
