UFC 134 Live Blog: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub Updates

    By Ben Fowlkes
    MMA Writer

RIO DE JANEIRO -- This is the UFC 134 live blog for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub, a heavyweight bout on tonight's UFC: Rio pay-per-view at the HSBC Arena in Brazil.

Nogueira (32-6-1) is returning from multiple surgeries, but is claiming he is finally healthy thanks to the layoff. Schaub (8-1) in March knocked out Mirko Cro Cop for his fourth straight UFC win.

Round 1: Not surprisingly, Nogueira gets a lot of love from the Brazilian fans. Schaub, not so much. Right off the bat, Nogueira ducks under a Schaub punch combo to look for the clinch, but Schaub won't stay there. Nogueira shoots for a double-leg, but again Schaub stops him and moves back to the center of the cage. Schaub misses with a big uppercut and gets tagged, but comes back with a left that sticks Nogueira. Stiff jab from Schaub puts Nog on his heels for a second. Nogueira keeps pressing forward and pops Schaub's head back with a straight punch. Nog comes forward behind a punch combo and again looks to bring the fight to the floor, but no dice. Nogueira lands a nice left that puts Schaub against the fence, then follows with a blistering combo. A left hook lands right on the button and Schaub goes face first into the mat. Nogueira adds a couple punches, but they're hardly necessary. Schaub is all the way out. Almost immediately, nearly full beers come flying into the Octagon. Time to cover the laptop with my body.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira def. Brendan Schaub via KO (punch) at 3:09 of round one

UFC 134 Live Blog: Forrest Griffin vs. Shogun Rua Updates

    By Matt Erickson
    MMA writer

This is the UFC 134 live blog for Forrest Griffin vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, a light heavyweight bout on tonight's UFC: Rio pay-per-view at the HSBC Arena in Brazil.

Griffin (18-6) shocked the world when he defeated Shogun at UFC 76 in September 2007. Shogun (19-5) receives this rematch opportunity in his home country and coming off a title loss to Jon Jones in March.

Round 1: Griffin, normally a fan favorite, is clearly on enemy turf here. Mark Goddard brings the two big boys to the middle, they touch gloves and we're ready to roll. Griffin comes out bouncing quickly in the middle. No real action for the first 30 seconds, but Griffin is backed up by Rua after missing a high kick. Griffin working kicks, but Rua lands a nice uppercut and then a knee. A left-right combo from Rua lands. Another high kick from Griffin misses. But Rua lands a big right and a left as Griffin moves in, knocks him off balance, then moves in. Rua swarms in and drops hammer fists on Griffin until Goddard stops the fight.

Result: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua def. Forrest Griffin, KO, 1:53 Round 1

UFC 134 Live Blog: Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami Updates

    By Matt Erickson

This is the UFC 134 live blog for Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami, the main event of tonight's UFC: Rio pay-per-view at the HSBC Arena in Brazil.

Silva (30-4), who is fighting the last person to beat him, is aiming for his ninth straight title defense. Okami (26-5) holds a 10-2 record inside the UFC and earned this title shot last November with a win over Nate Marquardt.

Round 1: No glove touch for the rematch after Herb Dean brings them to the middle. Silva looks loose. He takes the outside and circles left. Lefty-lefty matchup. Inside leg kick from Silva. He throws jab fakes to gauge distance, then dashes away from an Okami push. Okami lands a small left and clinches, but there's not much there. Silva throws a pair of right jabs from orthodox stance. He fakes some kicks. Then goes left-right and draws some attention with the right. Big left hook misses. Okami misses with a left, then clinches. He looks for some dirty boxing. Silva remaining calm, perhaps looking for a Thai clinch of his own. He lands a couple knees and guards against knees from Okami. The crowd boos a little bit at the extended tie-up as Silva is fine staying in the corner. Okami drops down to look for a single-leg, but a Silva knee reminds him he might not want to be there. Okami continues to keep Silva clinched on the cage, but at about the 1 minute mark, they break and go back to the middle. Looping left from Silva misses, and he dances out of the way of several Okami jabs in vintage Spider Silva style. Outside leg kick from Silva landsThen a right uppercut glances off Okami's ear. With seconds left, Silva lands a head kick, then a knee just as the horn sounds. MMA Fighting scores the first round 10-9 for the champion, Anderson Silva.

Round 2: Right-left from Okami gets Silva's attention and he starts moving furiously, even spinning around once. He ducks away from a jab, then eats one, then knocks Okami on his keister with a straight right. The he backs up and waits for Okami to get up. Silva's hands are at his sides, and he switches stances waiting for Okami to engage. A left from Okami looks good, but it does nothing. Silva drops Okami with a big left, and this time he moves in to finish. He throws body shots, knees to the midsection, hammer fists ... Dean implores Okami to defend himself, but Okami has nothing. It's really just too easy. Dean stops the fight, Silva jumps up and celebrates on the cage for his home country fans, and his dominance over the sport is once again on display.

Result: Anderson Silva def. Yushin Okami, TKO, 2:04 Round 2

Re: UFC 134 Results: Silva vs. Okami

Anderson Silva should fight GSP next. The thing is, Anderson will destroy GSP.
A true test for Anderson will be to fight Jon Jones.

I was surprised that Nog won.
I knew there was little chance that Forrest would win again. Rua is thinking he should get a title shot, but not after getting brutally KO'd as he did by Jones. He needs 2 more quality wins before he earns that.
My ultimate goal is an Albino Clown Pied.

The thing about Silva, beyond skill and talent, is that his body build is pretty much optimized for middleweight MMA. No one, no matter how skilled, can step up from welterweight and challenge him with any kind of likelihood of success. No one would consider a Silva fight against a top-tier light heavyweight fighter to be fair. The only way it could be "fair" is if Silva dropped down to welterweight to challenge GSP.

He'll stay in Middleweight through the end of his contract, never lose a fight, retire and give up the belt on his own terms, and have a career in boxing that no one pays attention to.
