    I've read to put them in the refrigerator overnight then to transfer them to the freezer in the morning, it's supposed to be very humane and easier on the tarantula. I've personally never tried this because my last male got munched after mating my large H. Maculata female. You could also try dry ice to render the t unconscious then place him in the freezer? Since your wife loves the little guy you could always do your best to make him as comfortable(plenty of food, water, warmth and humidity) as possible his last few days/weeks and just let nature take its course. Whichever you choose...Good luck
