underweight hatchling
I recently produced my first clutch of BP. I bred my male Fire to a normal female who produced 4 eggs, 2 fires 2 normals. Unfortunately one of my fires had a twisted umbilical cord and had not fully absorbed all the yolk and is half the size of the others. This is day 5 since all were out of there eggs and I am waiting on their first shed.
I know I am supposed to wait until after first shed to do the first feed, but seeing as how my baby fire is underweight, should I feed early? Will he survive long enough for his first shed?

He's not too tiny, wait til he sheds and offer food. If he doesn't take a pinkie right away give him mice hoppers til his weight is up, then try rat pinks fuzzies.

What I do to animal who do not fully absorb their yolk and by that I mean the majority of it was not absorb (not just a small portion) I offer food prior to their first shed (about 5 days after they hatch) if they are week and not eating on their own I will assist them and than wait until their first shed before doing anything again.

I had a whole clutch of 45 gram babies. 3 of the 4 babies are 80 grams and they were born a month ago.

You can definitely try to feed before first shed. People usually wait until after first shed, but it's certainly not necessary...give it a shot...
