Pythons are really only capable of producing one clutch a year (and often skip a year or two when being bred consecutively). It takes a lot out of them physically to produce a clutch and then they are geared for brooding it. Colubrids, on the other hand, are not maternal and don't devote as much time and energy to their clutches.
