Would you breed her this year?

I picked up this 100% het pied pair in Nov 2010. The female was around 650 grams when I got her and the male was about 450 grams. Today she is about 1400 grams on empty. The male is 700 grams and producing sperm plugs. They are going on 3 years old this year. I want to give her a try, and hope for some visual piebalds. At the same time I would wait, if I were only going to get a small clutch because she is still at that minimum weight range.

Both male and female have great het pied markers

That indistinguishable shiny thing is a quarter for size comparison.

She has retained a lot of yellow; I think she will make nice pieds one day.

Why not? If she's healthy 1400 grams is ok to breed her. If she doesn't take then you'll have to wait till next season. I bred a 1300 cinnamon, turned out fine. Good luck you still have a few months to plump her up too!

Go for it you still have plenty of time to get some more weight on her especially if she eats well.

Yes, sure, do for it. She's at the right age, and by say Sept or Oct she will have put on some more weight.

I don't see why not, 1,400 grams is a pretty good weight and there is still plenty of time before breeding season actually starts. As far as having a small clutch, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I had a 2,200 gram female that only laid 5 eggs for me this year, last year she laid 7. I had two girls that were almost half her size and they laid 4 eggs a piece. Size doesn't necessarily mean they will have a big clutch.
