    Define expensive?

You have the hydrofarm for $25-30 that works great for the price, others that are proportional and way better from 85-130 and what I want: the new herpstat 4 that goes upwards of 4 beans.

Given your last post I'd say a herpstat basic. It is more expensive but it very flexible and reliable. It is one of the least expensive of the proportional units at 109$.

The on offs are generally ok but do best in warm rooms with somewhat stable temps. They tend to swing in cool rooms (over shoot the set point and then under shoot it) the accuracy of the probe (may or may not matter depending on the set up) is not great on most of then either (twice the rating of most proportional units). the swing can be countered by a heavy enclosure like a tank but the swing can be quite pronounced in thin walled plastic (tubs)

Anything can work but for worry free and the most flexible units are going to be proportional ones they are all basically the same but I believe the basic herpstat is the lowest priced.

I'll second KiteDemon on this one, and recommend the Herpstat, for the reasons which I've underlined.
