I don't know about my new one, but Lily generally prefers it if I just leave the rat in for her to eat when she wants. I use similar style hides for my little ones and they are able to shoot out of them no problem. My male spotnose actually ambushed me one day.
I've been thinking about buying some RBI hides and I guess now might be a good time to do it. Some of my 2010s are out growing their hides, but they also love to hide under the paper so it doesn't matter as much to them.
I had the same problem when I tried to give mine bigger hides. She was using her old one as a hat more or less, so I decided to make some bigger ones and she refused to use them for several weeks. She would poke her head inside of them but wouldn't lay inside for any extended period of time. Eventually she relented and now she seems to love them as much as her old ones.
They are such creatures of habit that she probably just needs more time to adjust to it. And painting it a darker color couldn't hurt either
Hides for big snakes are a bit overrated. The majority of my snakes except the most finicky eaters don't have hides. A few rest under the paper but most of them curl up in the tub and do just great. Hides are much more important for small snakes IMO.
