    Confused....!

So my 500g Leucistic Blue Eye male hadn't eaten a small rat since 6/24/2011 and I had offered him a rat both live and frozen every week since. He has always eaten live ever since I bought him a year and half ago and was always a great eater until a small rat escaped his squeeze once and scratched him a tiny, tiny bit on his back. After one shed he was totally back to normal but had never been the same eater since. Today, just for fun, I bought him 2 adult mice and tried throwing one in and BANG he took it and ate it. So I say throw a second mouse in and get the same result. WTF?!?!? Has anyone else had this happen and will they easily go back to small mice?

    Re: Confused....!

I can't say I have, but since he is a male it's not a huge deal if he only eats mice, but rats are more nutritious and will gain weight on the snake. I would try a "crawler" rat, one who's eyes are just opened or about too. Good luck!

    Re: Confused....!

I think the small rat was overwhelming for your 500 gram pet.

I say "I think" because my female weighed 1800 grams when I first got her, she was fed only mice by her previous owner.

I quickly changed her to a small rat diet.

I have never owned a 500 gram snake, so I do not honestly know what food they are supposed to eat.

I believe you could feed him a few mice for now till he gains more weigh, then he may be ready for a small rat diet.

If that scared him too much it could have also put him off of rats for awhile. Unless the rat was a tiny weanling it probably could have been a bit too big.
I had a rescue last year that before she came to me was bitten by a medium rat. It took her 6 months in my care to go back to rats and I had to scent them and etc.
She still won't touch anything larger than a weaned.
