iPad 3 before the end of the year, most likely so that's something to keep in mind.
If you would like something more portable to carry around on a regular basis I say sure, but if not you may not get much use out of it.
I've had both gen iPads and they are very nice. My tablet of choice (at the moment) is the HP Touchpad. Maybe play with hers a good bit and see if you want one for yourself. On the bright side with the iPad, iPod and iPhone you guys can play that killer Scrabble game together
