Small Males and Sperm Production
I purchased my dinker male in late November of 2010. He was under 100g (I think around 80-90g but I'd have to go back and check). He is now around 215g (at last weigh in, empty) and eating like a machine. He downs 1 large mouse every week. Just the other day I decided to check his sex just to be sure. Next season is right around the corner and I want to breed him to one of my normal girls once he's big enough. I popped him and out came what I think might be a sperm plug. I've gotten them from my larger males before and this was identical to a sperm plug. Is it possible for him to be producing sperm when he's this small? He's around a year old now.

My biggest concern with breeding a very small male would not be fertility but that the male might not have enough reserves to carry him through going off feed in breeding season in good condition.

Oh I have no intention of breeding him at 215g. I'm going to wait until he is much bigger, maybe around 450-500g. I just found it surprising that at such a small size, he was already producing plugs. Is it more age, than size, that makes them mature enough to produce sperm?

I'm not sure. I've never tried to breed with a small male--mine were all around 1000gms or more. Sometimes much more--I had one big fatty I swore was a female until I rechecked and he was my best breeder.
I've known ball python females to breed at a far smaller size than I would intentionally breed one, so it might be more age related.

Yea the female he'll be breeding is an '05 2000g girl. I'm thinking 500g and then I'll throw him in with her. Depending on how he eats, it probably won't be until Spring.

Huh? Did you mean to say you've sexed males just out of the egg with sperm plugs?
