Between the glass and the uth is usually the best spot. There is little chance of it getting moved off the uth if it is outside the cage. You could also place it between the glass and the substrate inside the cage.

Thermostat probes go outside of the cage, not inside.
The thermostat probe gets taped to the UTH.
The thermometer probe goes inside under the substrate over the UTH

There is as you can see some debate on this one. Either can work if you place the probe inside the snake MUST not be able to move it I like to use hot melt glue you can break it if needed and but it holds super well. Inside is much more accurate and does not vary with room temps.

"The Herpstats are prewired so just hook up your UTH to it and mount the probe. I prefer having the probe in the tank mounted to the floor over the area where the UTH is. Secure the probe down with some clear packing tape. Then you can put newspaper or substrate over the top. Putting it underneath the UTH on the outside means ambient airflow can cool it off and you don't get a good idea what the actual temperature is in the enclosure. So for me.. probe in the enclosure, UTH under the enclosure. Having some risers under the enclosure is a good idea as it helps prevent the heat element from overheating and failure.

I don't like tape in the enclose myself but hot melt works.

The other way is mounted to the uth but the temps have to be adjusted as the room temps change.

What if the heater (as with an ultratherm) is in the cage?

What if you are using a RHP?

There are only a handful of absolutes in this hobby - where to stick a probe is not one of them.

Correct, I assumed the OP is speaking of a standard uth or flexwatt as they don't mention ultratherms.

I speak of the probe coming out of the hydrofarm thermostat not the whole unit in the enclosure.

Then I stand by what I posted, the probe goes against the uth under the tank.
If the probe is inside the tank and gets moved the zoo med uth's can get to 120 degrees or more.
