Is this normal? if so what is it?

I have a BP that is approx. 9 months old, he is shedding and he appears to have a mouthfull of something maroonish in color.
This has previously happened but it seemed there was just a little of something in his mouth. I tried to rub it off (gently) and nothing happened but once he was done shedding it was gone and he eats and everything appears normal. This time however it seems as if there is a lot of this colored, whatever it is and I am very concerned theres something wrong. Also he feels very light when I pick him up(I could be imagining it i guess but I don't think so.)
Does anyone know what this is and is it normal or should i take him to the vet.
    Thank you for any info.

What kind of substrate are you using ? It sounds like he got some of it in his mouth
