Can a 160 gram male in breeding mode?
HI everyone
I bought a very nice super pastel sugar from TSK 2 month ago.
They told me this male was born in August 2010, almost one year old. When I get the snake, he weight 120 gram only for almost one year old. I asked them how come and is he a picky eater? They told me he is totally normal and a good feeder. He just hatched small. They feed him one picky rat every 7 days for almost a year.
After I got him. I feed him every 5 days. He will take 2 to 3 fuzzy rat ( those eyes not open one )per feeding. I am very happy with him.
After 4 weeks, he weight 160 gram. I was so happy, and truly believed he is a good feeder.
However, 5 weeks ago. He stop eating. He only took 1 fuzzy rat every 10 days. I have no idea why? Everything is the same. My cold side is 82 hot side 89. It always the same. Nothing has changed.
Only thing I can think of was, 5 week ago. I placed a male pied into a het pied tub. Since that, few of my 1000 gram females eat less. Maybe they can sense the breeding. I didn't drop the temp during breeding.
So, can this 11 month old 160 gram male also in breeding mode and stop eating well?
Thanks any help will be appreciated. I really look forward to breed him the coming season, I guess that maybe just a dream now. Bad luck.

Hi,
I wouldn't have thought he was in breeding mode at that size.
I do think you should try bumping your hot spot temps to 92f.
What size of enclosure is he in? Maybe he would feel more secure in a smaller tub?
And look up the dreaded 1000g wall for the females.

I purchased my little pastel from TSK , and he was very small, when I ran his ID number I realized he was hatched 38g, a twin. He is an awesome snake and I'm happy with him, he will just always be small, he hatched July 26, 2010 and is now only 360g.
If you still have his list #, run it through their online data base and look up his hatch weight. If its in the 30's it was probably a twin.

Doubtful he's in breeding mode... Most likely won't be for a while at this rate...Sounds like you may have a bad eater on your hands...
Did you know the age and weight of the snake when you bought it? If so then why did you even buy him?

If he's been eating 2 to 3 fuzzy rats every 5 days for you, he may just be resting and allowing his body to catch up to the rate of food you've been giving him.
Move him to a 7 day schedule and see how he does. Also, at that size, I'd be keeping him in a six quart tub.

Thank you very much.
I forgot to mention, there is another thing which is his hot spot used to be 89, but in the summer, it goes to 90 - 92. I don't know why. So it is in 92 right now.

Thanks . Yes he is. They told me his hatch in 28 gram. And that is why they told me this is normal.

Thanks. I was looking for a sugar male, and my friend refer me to them. They did not has him listed in the website. When I ask, they showed me the pics. I told them I want him. Then later before I send the money, I did ask and find out his weight and age. I almost changed my mine. ( maybe I should )
But he is so hot looking and they told me he hatched small and will catch. I then posted a thread here and asked people. I got some positive answer, so I bought him.

I will take your advice. I have him in a 12 quart tub. The reason I didn't move him is that he used to eat so well in this tub for 4 to 5 weeks. But I will do it now.
