    BP Vet Prices

I was considering taking my baby bp to the local reptile vet (which luckily is only about 10 minutes away) and was wondering how much everyone usually pays for a regualar check-up for their snake. Thanks!!!

Save yourself some money...unless there is something wrong don't bother. When I got my first snake I spent $85 for his first visit....and I found out after my second one that I could send in a stool sample for $20, if it's negative for parasites then great, if it's positive then they would have to see them before they can treat it. I'd find out if you can just give them a stool sample to check instead of spending the $85-100 you'll spend if it's negative.

is there a problem with the snake ?
I've never taking mine or regular checkups.

The only time I've ever taken one to the vet, were the rescues that had issues, or any that appeared under the weather.

The price was all over the board then, all depended on which meds or shots were needed, any fecals or cultures were done, etc..

It will depend on what you may want them to check and how thoroughly...

I was just reading an article, but I was kind of curious if they needed check ups like a dog or a cat... thanks though!

Not necessarily. I get fecal tests done on any new ones just to be sure they are clean and free of parasites...but that's about it unless something is wrong the vet will just look it over and hand it back then hand you the bill lol.

I agree, don't waste your money. I took my first 2 BPs to the vet for a checkup and it wasn't worth it. The only thing I got out of the visit was that I learned my vet, who claims to be an exotic animal vet, knows nothing about BPs, even though he said he did. I got some pretty bad advice during my visit and wasted a lot of money.

I think the value of a visit depends on the vet somewhat. I believe that having fecals done yearly is a good idea, they can get internal parasites from food items. I know that my vet doesn't like to see new animals that are sick she wants to have a visit healthy for a base line. I guess that makes sense (and is a income maker too...).

I have learned that some internal parasites can survive longer than I expected frozen. (tape worm eggs need -7ºC for 36 hours but I was told 72 is better.) My freezer wasn't even at -7 anyway. Fecals are valuable but as stated you can collect and send them out yourself most vets in my area do they are not done in house.

My vet is about $110 a visit but that is a fecal included she is quite careful so it didn't feel like a waste of money to me. They will also do an IBD test as well if requested but that is quite expensive. New information is starting to make this test something to consider as well.

My vet is the same. A general check up with him is $25. But if you can't afford it, he understands and is more than willing to do a payment plan, or depending on what happend at the appt (like just a weigh in and a look at the pet, maybe even fecal test -not 100% on that part) then he MAY give free appts. He's given them to my bf for his Bearded Dragon once, but that was just a weigh in, and general check.

Needless to say that I absolutely love this vet and am more than willing to do a check up with him. He's one of the few vets in my area that seems to actually care about the animal, AND understand that owners can have money issues.

It's too bad we'll only have him for another year probably...
