In 13 years of being a vet tech this is the worst (graphic pic)

Today a stray dog who was rescued by DFW cocker rescue came in. His name is Sealey and he has burns over 25% of his body. We had to sedate him and remove the necrotic tissue as well as shave off the mats he was covered in. It took me 2 hours to clean and treat the burns. On days like this it is very hard to do my job I can only imagine the amount of pain this poor animal is in and besides keeping him heavily dosed with narcotics, there isn't very much we can do for his discomfort. The truly sickening thing is that in all reality a person did this to him, however for my own sanity I can only pray it was an accident. I don't want to believe that someone purposefully hurt this or any animal, he is so sweet and besides the obvious pain he is in all he wants to do is crawl in my lap and sleep.

Oh my god. That's just terrible. I'm considering going into vet tech training myself, but it's stories like this that make me second guess whether or not I'd be able to handle it without beating myself up for being in the same species as someone who would do this sort of thing to an animal.
Either way, you're helping him out the best you can, and that's all we can do. Big kudos for that and I hope he pulls through nicely.

3 months from now he'll be a whole new and happy dog. It's so sad that these things happen, and although I'm not a vet tech I understand. I work in public safety and have seen some horrible, gruesome, and cruel things that most people can't even imagine, but being there to help someone during the worst times of their lives (which this is probably the worst time of his life), as much as it sucks it's worth it. Unfortunately something like that doesn't happen by accident, and it's just so sad, but I'm confident he'll pull through, and he'll be truly grateful. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I'm sorry he had to go through this, I can't even begin to imagine the pain he's in. He's got a very long road before him, he's going to have daily hydro therapy for at least 4 weeks as well as peeling every week but he's a great dog and very tolerant despite the pain. He'll pull through.

God bless you and your Doc for taking care of a stray in such dire condition. I hope he recovers quickly. You obviously care and will give him the best treatment possible.

Thank you. This is one of those things that vets don't really have much to do with other than prescribing med's. Anesthesia and wound treatment fall under a techs license so all the treatments get to be done by me. Also I'm a VTS so I get to do a little more than the average tech. Most day's it's great but the next few weeks with this poor boy are gonna be pretty rough and emotional.

We had a severely burned dog at our clinic that recovered. Apparently, the owner's boyfriend was boiling bleach-water (?????) for cleaning (I still don't get it) and accidentally dumped it on the dog. He was an Affenpinscher, I think... a little black scruffy dog. He thought it was fine and didn't do anything. The owner got home a couple hours later and skin was sloughing off the front half of the dog and tissue was coming off its tongue. The water burned it in the mouth and down the throat. It was one of the hardest patients to work on - I was seriously seriously disturbed. The dog survived, but it took weeks of bandage changes, rehab and a stomach tube for feeding. It's hard doing your job when you see them in so much pain.
I hope little Sealey recovers quickly. He sounds really sweet.
Oh, and our client dumped the boyfriend.
