I got hit by a stone

Not just any stone. A kidney stone.

I have never felt such pain in my life. Had to go to the ER Tuesday night because I thought I was gonna die from the pain.

I got some real nice pain meds so I don't hurt now but it still hasn't passed yet. They said it was right above my bladder and should pass by end of the week. Hopefully it does soon. I've been drinking like crazy. I've grown to not like cranberry juice so much.

If you've never had one, it's the closest thing a man can come to feel labor pains.

Re: I got hit by a stone

i've heard it being compared to our labor pains but i have to disagree, unless it's a 6-8 lb stone... .
    & i've had 3 8+ lb kids (8.10, 8.8 & 8.13) so i KNOW that pain.

um, NOT disputing that it hurts however...i gotta make that clear, i'm just saying...

oh i totally HATE HATE HATE cranberry juice too.

i only drink it when i feel a kidney infection coming on...that is a unique pain in itself so i'm very good at being able to tell when its a kidney infection or not.

Well, that came from the doctor.

There's something called a ureter that goes out of the kidney and into the bladder. The ureter is full of nerves and only conditioned for liquid. When a stone comes out of the kidney and travels down it hits every nerve ending on the way until it hits the bladder.

My dad had one while on the road trucking. Like another said, not life or death, but it sure felt that way!

My husband's small medical device company is making a tool that will push the stone to one side of the ureter so that liquid can pass during the wait for removal. Since it's not life threatening, you usually get pain killers and an appointment (or "wait for it to pass"). If doctor's had the new device, they could easily push the little stone enough to let liquid pass painlessly until removal. A lot of the pain is the ureter swelling up like a lemon when it should be a cocktail straw. Ow.

    Hang in there!

Re: I got hit by a stone

I personally have never had a kidney stone but my boyfriend has had several in his lifetime. I remember driving him to the ER once because he was in such terrible pain. I had never known that they could be so painful.

The pain you described is no joke. I had kidney stones twice. Once in 2009 and once in early 2010. I've done lots of damage to my body before but NOTHING compared to the pain of my kidney stones. Whole new animal right there. First time all I got was tramadol (aka Ultram, a bullcrap drug which doesn't work half as well as a tylenol). The second time I laid in the ER for 6 hours hollering and begging for anything to alleviate my pain before the doctor mainlined me some dilauded. That worked for about two hours, but after that all I had for pain was my leftover tramadol. They believed that crap works miracles.

Kidney stones run in our families. My dad has had them, my father in law has had them, my mother in law has, I've had them. That means my wife and brother in law are next.

You have my upmost sympathies! I hope you pass them soon. Did they put you on flomax? You think the excessive drinking makes you have to pee? They put me on that I had to pee every 5 minutes and 4 of those minutes I was trying to not have to get up to go pee.
