Ok so I set up a 10 gallon tank with uth controlled by a dimmer for the time, two hides, water bowl, aspen bedding, and had a analog thermometer/hydrometer and everything looked good. 90 deg above the uht on the hots side 80 deg on the cool side, with 55% humidity. But today I picked up a accu rite indoor outdoor thermometer that tells humidity and it shows the same temps, but 40% humidity. Which humidity is correct? Does it take longer for the digital unit to get the correct reading? I want to make sure everything is set up right before my first snake gets shipped to me just after the 4th. I have a hydrofarm thermostat coming this week so I think I have everything covered.

It is sitting on top of my hide on the cool side. Not much room in a 10 gal tank.

I'd probably say the acurite is more likely to be correct - what kind of lid do you have on the tank? There may be a few easy ( and cheap ) fixes we could suggest to help you raise the humidity.

I have a screen lid with a piece of cardboard that I wrapped with foil which covers 2/3rd's of the opening.

A humid hide would solve all problems. The other thing to remember is inside the hide is a microclimate and ideally the humidity is measured inside it. The way cheaper digital hygrometers work is very very inaccurate and sensitive to contanimanates (dust dirt) they are often wrong more often than right. The test is easy and cheap it is called a salt test and will confirm the accuracy (or inaccuracy) easily.

The cheap analogue type that have a calibration screw seem to be very good and can be made accurate if needed. You can figure out the difference and just add or subtract but it will change depending of substrate, snakes actions and the salinity of the humidity in your area.
Bi-metal springs are not as sensitive to dirt and salinity, the snake can still knock them about however.

accurites are great especially the one with the probe for dual temp checks.

You are on the right track with the foil............. where is the water bowl? You might try moving it to the hot side, if you can get the hide and water bowl on the uth it will help a lot

i have 2 water dishes (one of which, is over the heat pad along with one of the hides).
the water dishes by themselves (when kept full) maintain a daily humidity of 50-60%.
i have this model accu-rite...



& i have it mounted on the inside back wall in the middle of the terrarium via 2" x 4" industrial strength velcro...like this...

Ok I got my hydrofarm today and set that up so now I have 90 deg above my uth heater and 77 deg on the cool side with 51% humidity by moving the water dish over closer to the uth and by covering all bit an inch or two of the screen lid. Is it ok to cover that much of the lid? Thanks for the input everyone. When I get some time I am going to try the salt test.
