Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz set for UFC 137 in Las Vegas

Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz set for UFC 137 in Las Vegas

by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jun 01, 2011 at 6:25 pm ET

The hurdles have apparently been cleared.

Despite his recent insistence that a bout between current UFC champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) and Strikeforce title holder Nick Diaz (25-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC) was anything but a done deal, UFC president Dana White today announced the two welterweights will clash in the main event of the previously unannounced UFC 137 event.

According to White, the contest will take place Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
I will be rooting for GSP all the way

So excited. I have to root for GSP, but I hate that he has to fight one of my new favorite fighters. It's going to taint someone's invincible image though...

    Iiiiinteresting..

So I assume this is not going to be a title fight? I wish they could do non-title fights still as 5 rounds though.

Put me down as another vote for GSP

Don't count out Diaz. The kid is awesome. I've been a fan since he started up. I like his little brother too. The kids are tough. Nick is dangerous on the feet and ground. I've been calling for this fight for a long time! How can you not be excited as a fight fan?

    Regards,

I'm not counting out Diaz by any means! He's a great fighter, and I sure like him way better than his brother (who really comes off as such a jerk).

The thing that makes me wary of thinking GSP can be dominant forever (or at least until he's 40) is his lack of finishing fights, particularly lately. I don't know if his game plan is to win by decision, or if his opponents are just so top tier that they are REALLY hard to finish, or some other reason, but it MAY be a weak point in his game.

Then again, there also seems to be a tendency lately of under-middleweight class guys with great records to be able to easily come out with decisions ALL THE TIME while keeping themselves protected, Frankie Edgar for example fits this category.

I think Diaz is going to be the biggest striking threat that GSP has seen in a number of fights, not to mention probably the best ground tactician. Diaz has only had one decision since 2007, and just about as many TKOs as submissions in that time frame.

As I said in my first post in this thread: Iiiiiiinteresting, cuz this fight certainly is going to be an interesting one.

I still am rooting for GSP and would also give him the edge over Diaz, I predict the fight going 5 rounds, being scored roughly 48-47, with GSP spending all 5 rounds attempting to punish Diaz ever time he comes in close, but Diaz coming close to finishing the fight once or twice. GSP will win/be saved by his ability to defend himself better than any other welterweights.

I am not counting him out nor would I be surprised if he won. I am a GSP fan and never really cared for Nick or his brother which is why I am hoping GSP wins. I do however very much respect the Diaz brothers fighting abilities though.

The diaz brothers are straight up thugs. They attacked jason miller at that strikeforce event. But they can back up their "thugness" with their skills.

I have confidence that GSP will win, but I'm going to be upset if he doesn't finish it. I'm sick of this playing safe, game. It's ruining MMA. The goal is to win, yes, but holding down an opponent for 20 minutes isn't skill or technical. GSP better start stepping it up.

The Diaz brothers are real at least. Half the crap you see fighters do and say is all BS. Mayhem Miller is an idiot. Why was he going into the cage anyway? He's always been a dbag. I got Nick by KO.
