    Nerissa's ovulating!

I've been playing the "is she or isn't she" game all spring, wondering if Nerissa and/or Mona would go this season... still not sure about Mona, but there's no question about Nerissa now! I checked on her this evening, and it looks like she swallowed a GIANT rat - despite the fact that she hasn't eaten since January. Woot!

While I am very excited for another clutch, I'm also a bit worried about Nerissa laying eggs... she's my picky ASF feeder (which are nearly impossible to get here), and has eaten maybe 10 meals in the last year. However, I just weighed her yesterday, and she's still a pretty healthy 1870g - about the same weight as she was last summer. How much more weight do you think she'll gain before laying?

I doubt she will eat between now & laying, so I'm just concerned about how skinny she'd be post-lay. I had actually stopped pairing her with the boys, due to these issues, but apparently that hook-up (with my Mojave) a few months ago did the trick. Anyway, wish us luck!

    Re: Nerissa's ovulating!

Congrats! I had a similar situation with one of my females this season. She was eating well for a while, so I started pairing her at 1400 grams (assuming she would continue to feed and grow). After a few pairings, she quit eating for me and started to get a little thin throughout the season. She ended up ovulating and giving me 5 good eggs, but it really took alot out of her. My plans are to give her next season off to catch up. Good luck with yours!

There it is! Congrats! I've had a picky feeder lay a clutch only to end up with a more better appetite due to the weight loss and extended fast from carrying eggs. Hopefully the same happens with you.

Depending on her weight in October you might want to give her a season off. I have had to do that a few times in the past. Hopefully she will eat like a pig after she lays. Good luck and congrats!

Thanks guys! I'll get some ASFs soon, either online or when I visit San Diego this summer (I know of a supplier down there)... and once she lays, I'm sure she'll be happy to get them!

Btw, she hooked up with both a pastel & Mojave, but the Mojo is more likely the father. I'm really excited about either pairing, since I can't wait to see how her light coloring complements theirs. These are the two potential papas:

Julius (with his daughter from last year)
