    feeding BP's peanut fed rodents

    We have been supplementing the diets of our mice and rats with peanuts the last few days. They are on dog food with assorted wild bird seed.
    The peanuts we feed are raw, unsalted obviously. My main question is: Are the peanuts in the bodies of the rodents in any way going to affect our BP's?
    Thanks for any answers or opinions.

    Won't hurt the snake and won't help the rodent either.

    Is is that the rodent won't benefit in any way from the peanuts or that they can get excessively fat if not fed peanuts in moderation?

    Nuts have no nutritional value and make rodents fat.
    If you want to treat them now and then it's not a big deal and won't hurt a thing.
    But there is nothing gained by feeding rodents nuts or seeds of any kind.

    I agree nutritionally nuts are pretty poor but I have had luck with adding nuts and some other seeds to decrease the number of pinkies eaten by their moms. I'm not sure what it was about the nuts that did the trick but it helped my numbers pretty significantly as snakesrkewl stated though there is a lot of fat in them so watch the amount your giving.

    I've read that the nuts have protein and moms eating their pinkies can be from not having adequate protein. I put some dog food or a little bit of cat food (just not too much on the cat food, then they can get protein over load) in the pregnant and nursing mom's food. Then sometimes I'll put a bit in the babies' food for the first week after they're separated from mom.

    Sorry about the thread jacking ^_^;;

    The nuts are fine, the bigger issue is that birdseed is worthless for any kind of rodent. Its all just fats and oils. Recommended rodent block diets or sometimes you can get away with dog food (but you can have other problems like protein deficiency and allergies). A lot of people feed Suebees diet to their rats (mostly pet owners, but look it up on google its got a lot of good things in it).

    Nuts are a good source of fat and protein, I would offer them as a treat, especially with the shells on (peanuts for example) its like an enrichment toy as well as a treat.

    As much as I hate peanut butter. Peanuts are among one of the most protein high foods pound by pound.

    I believe that's why peanut butter was invented...protein source for the toothless.
