Heck yeah. No way would I let some stranger into my home, it's my home, not my business. Whenever I meet people, especially those I meet through craigslist, I meet them in public with my dobie in the car and the windows rolled all the way down. The last time I met someone she about scared the poop out of the guy, lol. She is pretty intimidating so I'll give him that

I got my Yellowbelly from a breeder who does the business from his house. He let me see a bunch of his collection including the father of my snake. It was a cool experience but I can totally understand why somebody wouldn't want a stranger in their home. Most people are normal but once you let a psycho in that can be scary.

Mind you generally the big breeders that let you tour their facilities also have multi layer security systems LOL

Exotics of all types have always been big theft targets. There was a pet store a few years ago that had some junkies break in to steal the exotic birds, they didn't know if the metal quarantine tags identified the birds or their owners so they simply cut that foot off of each stolen bird and then tried to pawn them off on CL. Some of the parrot magazines have reported for years about cases were someone heard a parrot while walking down the street and then came back just for it, leaving the rest of the house alone. How many threads have we seen on forums about stolen snake collections?

High end dog breeders have less to worry about because of chipping, dna registries, etc. and unlike snakes they tend to screen perspective buyers to make sure they're going to be good for the dog. Meaning background checks, interviews of family & friends & employers, checking THEIR house to make sure it would be a good environment ahead of time. My family has gone through that process before with dogs and they even try to keep track of the line after-sale. We had one breeder [we're talking a couple doing it as a personal small business and not some giant commercial farm] said they'd turned down & blacklisted buyers for using the "wrong" brand of dog food.

Thats nuts ive never heard of anything like that with buying dogs.

Doesn't sound abnormal, I'd assume since they don't know you they wouldn't want you knowing where they live and keep their probably very expensive collection. That leaves room to get their animals sick or now you know where to break in if you feel like stealing some high end morphs. Doesn't seem worth it....there are some really bad people out there.

Every time I have purchased something from craigslist, I have met the owners at their home. However when I sell, I always meet at the nearest gas station or etc. I suppose it is just more convenient to have the buyers come to your home, but as stated - it is much less safe.

The commercial breeders have security, but more importantly, they have insurance to cover the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of animals they own.

From what I've read it is pretty much impossible to insure a snake collection. Any more info as to which breeder was able to insure their collection, and from whom?
