    temp???

I have my humidity at a constant 50 plus or minus a few here and there. the temp with my heat pad stay at about 80-85 depending on how much bedding stays over the mat. But with the light off the air temp drops to about 70-72 at night. with the light on during the day its at about 84 also, up or down a few depending on the day.. Now at night the husbandry sheet say the ambient temp should stay at around 80, but with my snake in her hide or anywhere on the heat pad with my IR gun the temp is about 80-85 no matter what the heat from the light gives off. So does the air temp cause that much of a problem when the snakes temp on that side of tank is at 80-85 all the time????

Your hot spot is 80-85 (because that's low) or your saying your air temp is 80-85? I don't really understand stand what your exactly asking, sorry

    Re: temp???

my air temp is what is lower when i have the light off.. At night air temp drops to 70-72.. With the heat pad under the hide on the hot side the temp is always at 85. im just asking if the ambient AIR temp matters as much as the surface temp where the snake is always at????? I hope im explaining this right, i check the air temp with a thermometer and the surface temp with an IR gun..

    ur doing great

as long as ur hum. is good and your SURFACE temp stays at 90-95 you will be fine. and if you have a hide over the heat pad, doesnt the heat pad make good AIR temp in the hide as well as SURFACE temp in the hide but just as long as it has a nice temp (92 is good) in her hide she will be fine for the night and if things warm up durring the day that that just perfect!

    Re: temp???

BPs are nocturnal, so she most likely won't be in her hide at night when it's colder. 72deg is a little cool. Everything I've found recommends 76-80deg air temps at all times to keep from risking respiratory infections.

this is why i said it would be fine as long as it stay around wat the person said it was but it wont be a health risk scine she has a hot spot retreat and the temps drop naturaly so i dont see a big deal in this

if u are worried you could put a low wattage red bulb on the tank, if it is a tank

Ambient air temps are often misunderstood in the role in thermal regulation. Snakes have large lungs (lung in some cases) typically extending at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the total length of the animal. It occupies the anterior end which also hold heart, liver, and upper end of the stomach. The lower end is kidneys intestines and reproductive organs. even when on a warm surface cold are will chill the blood from the heart and cause a dropping of the core temps. The animal will react by staying on the heat to try to lift the core temps up and in some cases causing burns to the exterior belly to try to regulate the core temps.

The air temps should be warm but not too warm the inverse can also happen. Typically mid to high 70s low 80s is what I'd suggest 85 is the high side for ambient air temps and 74 low side. The other thing to remember is if you have a enclosure that has a gradient (not just a hot spot and cold spot) you will very likely have a micro climate in the hides and in various areas. The air temps in those cases often will vary as well.

Measuring my ambient air temps I currently have mid point center 80º, hot side hide height is 83º cool side hide height is 76º the coldest point is is the front hot side low at 75º. The hottest point is hot side hide interior at 84º

The coolest point may seem odd but look at it this way the enclosure is a very well insulated custom plastic sided with sliding glass doors. The UTH causes the air to warm and rise and forces cool room air to enter around the doors and through the cool side vent (low in the side) The glass cools off and stays cooler than the rest of the interior so it also causes a localized drop. Combined the coolest ambient air temps are just inside the glass door beside the vent. I am careful to place the hot hide at the back.

    I hope this helps some.

    Re: temp???

Back when I only had one bp and I kept her in a glass aqarium type enclosure the cool side would dip down into the low 70's at night wich IMO is too cold for bp. I like to keep mine right at 80 on the cool side, and definetely no less than
    78. What i did to remedy this was, at night time I would turn on a red heat bulb directly over the cool side hide. I kept it plugged into a dimmer aka rheostat, so that it was barely turned on. I kept a very close eye on the temps the first few nights to make sure it didnt get to hot and got it dialed in to where it stayed right ar 80 all night. Alot of people recomend not to do this because there's a heat source at both sides of the tank when there should only be one on one side. I never had any problems and just made sure to keep a good eye on the temp so that my snake had a nice temp gradient. I prefer 80 cool side then gradually up to 88 on warm side, and 90-92 under the warm side hide.
