Change the demonimators to all the same number then you can add them up easy

hence

2/3 and 1/2

change the denominator to (bottom number to the same number) lets go with 6

2/3 x2=4/6
1/2 x3=3/6
add em up.....7/6 which is 1 whole and 1/6
