Looking for a little experience here!

So, I picked up another ball at a show a little over a week ago. He is a grown normal het for Albino and I didnt pay a ton of money for him so I thought I got a great deal!!

I thought wrong. When I first looked at him he had some stuck shed on him which I didnt think to much about. Other than that he looked great.

I let him be in the rack the first two days at home so he could acclimated a bit, on the third day I took him out of his tub and noticed what I thought was a hiss at first but then he did it over and over, more like a wheezing and I kept him out a little longer and I heard a bubbling and popping. I know these are all signs of RI so I cranked up the heat a bit because I have read that it can help early in a RI. Tonight I opened the tub and the same thing is still going on, maybe a little worse so tomorrow I am going to get him to the vet.

Sorry for the length of the story but my question is simple, I have never had one of my snakes get sick and now I bought one from a breeder that is already sick, what can I expect to pay to get this guy healthy?

It really depends on the vet you find. Mine just charged me 87.50 for the office call and gave me the meds free. Then when we switched to a different med, he sold me the new med for $4.50. I am under $100 with my RI for one snake.

Ah that stinks. One thing about shows, is that the snakes aren't in heat for a least a day or two. Depending on the breeder it's possible that they have been quite a bit colder than they should have gotten. Moving them to and from the show can be troublesome when it's cold outside. I would hope that's how the snake got RI, and not that the breeder knew that it had RI.

I can't tell you about the price though. I haven't dealt with a sick snake either.

I don't know about cost of medication, but the two vets near me that I've talked to who deal with exotics charge around $85 for an office visit alone. One of them even charges an additional $10 for the first visit. Animals are expensive.. cost me $80 this morning for a vet to come to my house just to tell me my miniature donkey is most likely not actually pregnant (hard to tell with them sometimes).

Most of my vet visits have cost me around 150-200.00 and that's with my personal discount from my vet bc I'm the local rescuer.

I was very fortunate in my reptile vet when my rescue got a severe RI.

$30 for the office visit, another $30 for the antibiotic shots. When one course did not completely knock it out, they let me buy another round without an additional office visit.

In general, plan on $100 to $150.

I'd be beyond ecstatic if I found a vet who only charges $30 for a visit! You're lucky

I actually have an appointment at the vet tomorrow morning at 8:30, the cost of the office visit is $40 so I guess I can live with that, I was thinking this thing was gonna cost me lots of cash!! Once all said and done if I'm right around $100 or so I will still be pleased with my purchase I guess, not as much as I would be if he was already healthy but I guess this is part of it...

    Thanks for all the replies!
