1/2 Peat Moss/Aspen Bedding as Substrate..Is that okay?

    Hey all,

Well I went and got some Peat Moss today. I was wondering if its okay or if you think its okay for me to do a layer of Aspen along the whole bottom of tank, then a layer of peat moss across that, then half of the peat moss be covered by aspen so half of the tank is aspen the other half peat moss. He seems to be liking it. He is on both sides equally but. He is really exploring it. I am having humidity problems, badly. I couldnt get it above 30% for the longest. now its at about 40 - 50 but i just put this moss in there about 2 hrs ago if that. Its not super moist but it is a LITTLE moist. Just wondering what ya'll thought. Thanks.

I have never used peat moss, so I can't really say anything about it. Just make sure that you don't have the substrate layer too thick over the UTH.

I don't know what type of enclosure you are using, but if you are using a glass tank some things that might help your humidity issues are:

    1) Cover most of the top with aluminum foil.
    2) Get a larger water bowl, or add a second one to the enclosure.
    3) If you are using a Ceramic Heat Emitter or one of the red heat bulbs, you can hook it to a lamp dimmer, which will let you adjust it so that it maintains the ambient temps without running full blast. This will reduce, or at least slow down, the amount of humidity that the lamp is sucking out.

I do know that aspen bedding can mold fairly easily, if kept water for periods of time. So you will want to keep an eye on that. I know people have had this problem in the past with water spilling out of the water bowl, and not removing the water aspen. I don't know if you will get the same results with moist peat moss sitting on top, but it is something to watch for. I hope this helps and good luck
