    Ow, that hurt. :/

My tongs are lost, so I feed with my hands.
Today I got hurt, and not because of a bite, but myself.
I dropped a pinky mouse in for my corn snake, Cheesecake, and she wouldn't eat it. So of course, I picked the thing up to check if it had gone cold, and she struck at me--I reacted instinctively and jerked my hand back, and cut myself on something sharp around the lining of her tank.
It freaking hurts. It's a big slice in my 2nd smallest finger, next to my pinky.
I'm not afraid of them biting me, I know it isn't that painful, but for some reason I spaz out. It's hard to retrain yourself.
    Photos coming in a minute.
...Cheesecake was being extremely defensive. I have no idea why. She's in blue but usually doesn't act different.

I still don't like the idea of getting bitten, even by little Corn Snakes

I have been bitten plenty, but I don't think you ever settle into the idea.

Of course, your injury was worse by AVOIDING the bite... Sorry about that. Sounds like something that would happen to me.

Yep, I've nicked some skin off before even when I had the tongs from jumping back when my BP struck at me. I do the same thing when even my new little kitten scratches at me.
    It's just instinctive I guess.

    Two things,

I never bother to heat the mice for my corns so there is no need for me to check if it is cooling down.

Go find whatever managed to do that to your finger and deal with it before the snake finds it too.

i would think pulling back would be a pretty typical reaction. I think it is maybe because when your not expecting it it startles you.

    agreed.

I have been lucky enough to not have been bit yet. (knock on wood) but I know you are not supposed to jerk back. How do you do that? It seems to me you would jerk back before even realizing what just happened.

There was an Untamed and Uncut video where a Boa bite the owner in the face and when he jerked back it broke off her teeth and she never ate again and died. I felt bad for the owner who jerked back instinctively and morns her. It is always the thing that sticks in my mind when it comes to snake bites.

My "worst" bite involved a tooth too. It was just a corn snake bite that I washed and put an antibiotic on. Over the next few days it started swelling and burning. I took a closer look and noticed something hard in one of the larger cuts. Sure enough, there was a tooth in there. Tiny little thing, but that was worse then any of my bites by significantly larger snakes.

i do the same thing you do sometimes, jerk back... one time i did this not because of a snake but because of a leopard gecko that bit me and i jerked back fast with my hand, putting it right thru the glass of the tank breaking the tank... OPPS! That wasn't any fun.

so i totally know how much that hurt!

ive been bitten more times than i can count! ive worked with all sorts of reptiles my entire life. several years of that professionally. i STILL flinch when i get struck at. i used to have a common snapping turtle that would ram his face into my hand when ever id pick him up. for some reason he never opened his mouth, just rammed his face into me. freaked me out every single time!
