    Where do you buy your Ball pythons?

    We are just starting our collection and currently only have one female, (a spider) and 2 males (lesser, and pinstripe). We are looking for more females to get started with a breeding project. Some of the morphs we are interested in are Pastel, Mojave, Black pastel, Cinnamon, het ghost, het clown, het axanthic, het hypo. We are not going to get them all right away. The pastel and mojave are our top choices. Where did you buy your snake(s)? Do you have a breeder you prefer for online business? Do you have any suggestions on a good/cheep way to start a breeding project.

    hypo = ghost

    i wouldn't suggest getting hets without a male to go along with them, because you won't know if any of your offspring are het or not.

    as far as where to get them from, i would check local breeders first, because you can get a quality animal without having to ship. If not there are tons of places to find animals online.

    We were thinking of Het because we will probably keep a lot of the babies with just starting out and after a few generations we would be getting our co-dominate traits with recessive traits as well. Plus it will give us some new genes to mix in and cheap females.

    I look mostly on fauna as someone pointed out, and have made a good number of friends on there, which is how I got started..

    NEVER buy a het from someone without doing your research! Remember, paperwork is easily faked! So only buy a het from someone who is reputable!

    Honestly, It is cheaper in the long run to just buy a ghost instead of a het, then holding back all the babies in hopes that a few are hets, then raising them up, and breeding back etc etc..

    with the time and money and gambling of hets.. it is faster and cheaper to save up and get yourself a visual!

    Re: Where do you buy your Ball pythons?

    I actualy got my most healthy snakes from a local petstore that gets there stock from J&Js in calgary! im very happy with them as neither of them have ever refused a meal..unlike the ones i have gotten from an online breeder whom i thought was reputable..both are doing very well in my care now though!

    and of course i will always been willing to rescue a snake from a petstore if i have the funds and space! my heart goes out to those poor creatures that are miss treated in stores.

    That could be tough, considering a breeding of a het with a non-het would throw 66% offspring. :/ So you could easily miss getting those recessives.

    I would recommend buying them young and trying to get visuals instead of hets, because then you know without a doubt what you have. :] And, you can start small because oh man, you're going to have lots of babies once you start breeding! if you keep most of them, you're going to develop a good stock of single-genes and 100% hets from breeding more genetically complex to start with.

    Re: Where do you buy your Ball pythons?

    I bought a lot of my snakes at local reptile shows! Just make sure that you ask the person if they produced the het or not. (a lot are middle men) I have made some friends there, and know who can be trusted. It's still somewhat of a gamble. I would recommend a Pastel het ghost and kill 2 birds with one stone. They are not much more than a pastel.

    I have bought many snakes online too! So far I have not had any trouble. You can also do a search on most peoples reputations online.

    Good luck
