    too humid?

Hi guys, I am not new to snakes but new to ball pythons. I received my first one earlier this week. He is in a tub with UTH on thermostat. I got cypress bedding to put him on, but what I did not do was setup the tub with the bedding in it before I added the snake to regulate the humitity right. Dumb I know, but I want to be a good bp Mommy and fix it. So, right now my humidity is above 80%. I would like to keep it around 60%. I am afraid that I don't have enough holes in the tub to keep air circulating good. I have 2 rows of small holes on 2 sides of the tub and in the top of the lid. There is condensation inside and it is too wet, I don't want him to get scale rot. blah. So, here is my question, should I take the cypress mulch out and use paper towels in the bottom instead? My worry is at I will stress the snake too much. He was shipped to me Wed and I will admit I have held him for a few short periods of time and I check his tub too much to see what humidity is etc. When I get a new snake I do not feed or handle for a week and I may even give him more time to settle in. However, I want to make sure his environment is right and drill more holes or change the bedding as soon as possible if I need to. Any help and friendly advise is appreciated, thank you. Cool side of his tub is 78 and warm side is 85 right now.

As long as the bedding isn't wet, there shouldn't be a danger of scale rot....

I would leave him alone as much as possible for the week or maybe a little longer. If you really feel the need to drill more holes just do it. Put the new bp somewhere quiet, drill your extra holes and put him back. I do have a question though. How high is the humidity?

Personally I try not to handle any of my new bp's until they have eaten at least once for me....

Humidity is above 80% according to a crappy stick on gauge. The gauge I have in there now tells "inside" temp on cool side, "outside" temp on warm side and humidity. There isn't even a number on it now, it says "HI" on humidity.

I would probably put a few more hole in the tub... Just don't get to carried away. Remember once the holes are there they are there....

Yes, I think I will add some more holes tonight. Only thing is all I have is a dremel tool with a small drill bit to make holes. Lots of tiny holes are the same as several bigger ones right? Or should I just try to make the holes I have bigger? Sorry I have so many questions, I keep colubrids and have never had to worry about humidity like this and have never kept an animal in a tub before.

You can also try using a small oscillating fan, or a ceiling fan, if you have one in the room. Fans don't have to be blasting right on the tub. Usually, oscillating on low speed from 4-5 feet away is all that is needed.

You might try a few hole low in one end or side. Air and temps stratify so holes at the top may not actually increase air flow hole at the lower side by the hot end will draw in air as the hot air rises. and exit out the top.
