would dividing it into two 24" x 16" x 14" (w x d x h) tanks be much too small for a grown BP?

It depends on his size (grams) and behavior , generally males are kept in 28 qt tubs and the dims are approximately 24*16*6 so the only difference is on height. I would say that it would be ok to split the tank. I keep all my males in 28qt tubs and they eat like pigs.
