Is this an acceptable pre-wired fan to use in an incubator?
Hey everyone,
I must say, i read countless thread on fans for incubator althought it seems simple and probably is. I would rather go with something pre-wired. I was looking into this: http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.co...m?pcatid=14701
and wanted to know if it was acceptable for a home made incubator about 3 feet tall, 24 inches wide., by 15 inches depth?
It is running on 12v from what i read.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.
thanks

You dont need anything that powerful, just a computer fan will work fine. I run mine 24/7.
Thats what I have used for years in a Coke fridge bator. Just enough to move air around but not dry or cool air too much.

I would be worried about it getting to hot and shorting out and/or causing temp. spikes in the incubator.
I bought mine from Helix and havent had a single issue

Wow, those are crazy overpriced for what you are getting.
As far as the OP question, that rig looks like nothing more than a series of 80mm case fans. In which case, in theory they should be fine. But the only way you will know for sure is with a test with the unit. Could it cause temp spikes? You bet. Always need to test regardless.
If I was to go with those, I would get two of the double-fan units and put one down low and one up high in the incubator, depending on how big the unit is I suppose this could vary.
Just don't trust them with your eggs until you are confident in them. Test!
EDIT: Just reread your post with your incubator dimensions. Unless you are getting temperature variations throughout the incubator I don't know the you necessarily even need one or more fans. That is a relatively small incubator, so there isn't a ton of room for temp variance. I'd check to see if its necessary before you go down that road.

why would you worry about any of that as opposed to any other fan? your helix can do that also.
and those fans are way to big for his incubator, 24 cu ft is the smallest...
I think the fans would work, but chances are its overkill for what you need, like said above its not that big. I use 2x 30mm (basically 1 inch) fans in my cooler incubator, which is smaller than yours but works wonderfully.
your just trying to push air around to keep temps constant, there shouldn't much velocity.

I use a single 4" fan that is used to cool aquarium hoods. Used it for 3 years now without a problem. It is actually cheaper than a computer fan setup fron Radio Shack also.

Thanks everyone for the input. At the moment, i'm unable to do any testing with heating as the freon has still not been removed. I plan to have it removed this weekend to do temp testing. I figured i wanted to look into fans ahead of time and i know the radioshack one seems like the better option. I guess my problem is hooking it up to an adaptor.(potential fire hazards and such.) I have looked into the one Briz recommended(aqualight cooling fan) initially which brought up the search for the Azoo cooling fan as the aqualight is no longer being made.
At this point, if a fan is necessary in my case after testing my heating elements, i have the option of making my own or ordering one for helix.
thanks guys!

I didnt and still dont think they are. They are plug-n-play ready, and advertised to be used specifically for incubators by a very very reputable source in the hobby.

I would worry about overheating because:
I am very "low-tech" and have read numerous post over the years that some fans can get really hot. Also if you go to the link of the fans that the OP posted it specifically states in the "more information" section :•If placing cooling fan in cabinet, the cabinet MUST have an open back for proper ventilation
That is enough for me to worry that these fans may overheat in an incubator (cabinet).
The small Helix fan that I posted is NOT to big for his incubator.
If you read the description, these fans are adjustable (different speeds).
I also know that these fans can work for his size incuabtor because thats what I am using them in. Something of very similar size. I am not stating that these fans are the best, or the only ones that can work, or the cheapest. But they are plug-n-play, advertised specifically for incubators and COULD work for his application.
Thanks
Anthony

the fans are ment to pull heat away, it needs ventilation to do this, it actually states "use cooling fans during summer, in warm areas with little or no air movement, or in areas with equipment that generates excess heat." I see no reason to worry, its a computer fan with clips on it. and now that im looking the cfm is pretty low for 2x fans, as its only 31 and most 80x80 fans are 30 cfm themselves, so it probably good for what you need.
and if helix would of put that information with the rest of the bullet points I might have seen that.
