Re: Why are people such hippocrits (sorry if I spelt it wrong)?

    i'm with angllady2.
granted i feel that everyone is entitled to their feelings and opinions and it should not be implied that someone, especially a guy is "less then" just because he's a little emotional.
it really bothers me to hear people say "man up and quit your baby blubbering." to a young boy who say, accidently let go of a balloon he JUST got or fell and scraped his knee. in the times i have heard other parents making those comments to their seemingly devastated kids i've stopped and gone "how would YOU react if you accidently dropped a wallet with a bunch of cash in it and the money fell out and got scattered in the wind?!"
my bf made the mistake of saying "your a boy. us boys dont cry." to our son a while back when he fell and bumped his head. believe you me that was the LAST time he ever uttered those words (or anything like them) to our son after i got through with him. i think it's wrong that boys are taught to "be tough", dont show any kind of emotion, it's considered a weakness. feelings are feelings and they should be allowed to flow as they go.
    but anyways, i digress, sorry.
before anyone who fits into this "tough guy" thing bashes me for saying guys should be able to show emotions, please let me say that i do agree that the emotional friend's logic on the cycle of life is a little off, he should still be entitled to feel the way he feels. our feelings are what make us human.

Tell him the same way that sweet little rat would happily eat him if it had to. Like it or hate it, deal with it or don't deal with it, it is nature.

All animals eat living things to survive. Even the grass that the cows who make those tasty steaks is alive, so where do you draw the line?

If the animals butchered to feed him is a different story, what about the animals his cat or dog catches and eats? What about the helpless fly that spider in the corner of his ceiling just bit and paralyzed and then injected with enzymes to slowly dissolve it's insides while it's still alive? Or the crickets that cute lizard who lives under his porch eats whole? What about the worms he slowly drowns to catch a fish he will chop apart while it's still alive to fry for supper? Does he weep over these things?

If not, then he should. How is there one bit of difference between you feeding your snake a rat to help it survive any different than any of these other things ? If he feels you are being cruel, then by turn so is he. If he wants you to stop, then by all accounts, he should get rid of his dog or cat, spray the house for spiders, run the lizard off and never fish again. You cannot single out one person or action as cruel and deny the reality of the rest.

    Gale
    This is UTTERLY ridiculous.

Why should HE have to do as YOU say?

Keep in mind that we only have one side of the story to start then keep in mind that if it was YOU in the supposedly crying boy's place, your opinion of what YOU think HE should do, were it now you, would most likely be diametrically opposed to the crap you posted above.

If not, then perhaps there is indeed something wrong, but once again, not with the boy.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?

    I ain't buying your story.

It reads like a bad elementary school play - what with the melodramatic "GASP", the uncontrolled sobbing and the bull spit disclaimer that this mysterious "friend" (who was sitting in your car), was just a step up from a passing acquaintance.

I get the is not the same. I also agree it is hypocritical at least to a point. I believe that death is so far removed from modern 'city dwellers' anyway that it is easy to forget that steak doesn't come from styrofoam trays. Everybody knows it is cow, but the don't KNOW if you see my point.

I live in a city the largest in my region (still small by comparison) the country isn't far removed ere. But we are still buffered from that reality that we kill things for meat.

I was 14 or 15 when on a visit to my grandfathers house I had spent the day (nothing else around) hiking and stopped to see the cows down the road. I love animals I make no distinctions. Upon arriving for supper Dad said something along the lines of I am glad you enjoyed those cows now lets enjoy this cow pointing at the BBQ I was late for...

I thought about it that night and the next day I went to speak to the farmer Mr. Wendle. He is a very ethical minded man and care about and for his animals and felt (he passed away some time ago) he makes his living on the cows death so he owes them to insure it was pain free and as gentle as could be contrived. The only way to be sure, he did it himself. That year I helped him. I spent a difficult day killing cows. I did a bit of every task and actually killed 10 cows personally.

I understand that is not an opportunity that is easily repeated. I didn't eat any meat for about a half a year but the smell of the BBQ that spring and a visit and long talk with Mr. Wendle changed my mind.

I believe that that is one of the great benefits of snake ownership. The reality of death and food is very close and not cleverly disguised in styrofoam. I always thought that butchers departments should have pictures of cows in fields and perhaps of a full dressed carcass beside it. We forget that cows come from fields not styrofoam, we allow people somewhere to kill cows all day all year and forget that they are alive feeling creatures and allow horrors to be done because we just don't want to know.

For my part I eat meat, I buy local beef when possible and have been to the local slaughterhouse to see first hand how that is done to the food I eat. It isn't and carefully as Mr. Wendle but it isn't exactly a horror show either. It isn't a huge operation so I can't speak for those but you can see how it could get out of hand easily.

I have also visited the place I get rats from, I have seen the treatment they get and the death they have they are well looked after and killed in a reasonable way and treated well the whole time.

The man with you is a hippocrit but be easy on him he just doesn't KNOW it. It is a difference between dealing death and paying someone else to do it. Snake keepers deal death, when you look down on the rat mouse or rabbit, if you bought it live and you kill it, the snake kills it, or if you bought it dead there is still no way you can pretend that it wasn't alive. That the snake has to eat and it has to kill things to do that is not a idea that you never have to think about it is there in front of you.

"That is different" I am sure it is for him. I just don't think it should be.

While I agree that his reaction was over the top (which in itself is an opinion, mind you) and that the fact that he eats meat but has an issue with the guy feeding a rat to his snake is more than a bit hypocritical....well, he is human. ALL humans are guilty of some form of hypocrisy at some point. Be it an infant, a child, or an adult. A baby will cry if you are eating something and won't but will not share, while not seeing the need to share himself. A child will kick and scream about another child needing to take turns with the XBOX but will happily hog it herself. I could give example upon example.

In any case, this guy is human like the rest of us. He is entitled to his moments of hypocrisy. He is also entitled to have emotions, regardless of whether or not them seem appropriate to others. That is his opinion, that is how he personally feels, and that is ultimately his business. Opinions are like anuses. Everybody's got one and they all stink.

    two words...

    FOOD CHAIN!!

plus, there is nothing wrong with thinking it is "cool" to watch a snake eat. I find it facinating how the snake constricts its food. PLUS... in all reality, your snake food is a RODENT. I bet if that rat was chewing thru the guys drywall or attic he wouldn't care what the snake did to it...
Also, is it better for these RODENTS to be killed by traps or poison and then thrown out... or being put to good use to feed a cool looking snake?

    Just saying...

I realize reptile hobbyists and gender/orientation allies don't overlap much... but could people maybe dial down on the "ugh effeminate men" remarks a bit? It's getting kinda gross.
