Someone make me feel better about this ~$60,000 piece of paper

I've got the same problem. I've got a very unusual degree from a school with a difficult reputation and i can't find worthwhile work. I work in retail and I hate my job. Its the biggest source of stress and anxiety in my life and I have to deal with it almost daily. (Even on my days off I get texts from my boss about work-related things).

And people keep telling me "oh it gets better" etc,etc, etc. But it doesn't help that I went to college to AVOID the kind of work I'm doing now. What I'm trying to do is more freelance stuff to take my mind off the job I have.

All I get to tell myself is "at least I have a job"..or something. But to be honest, there are some jobs that are just not worth it. Its so sad when your job is ONLY a paycheck.



Keep applying, thats what I do. I just wish they would be honest in their job descriptions. I applied for a job I was perfectly qualified for, but they neglected to add the part about a Masters degree in engineering in the job description. (Not what my degree is in).

I'm sorry for the rant, this is a push button topic for me because there are so many wonderful, deserving graduates out there that just want to work.

shoot you aint alone there girly. we're living on a minimum wage/disability income and raising 2 children under the age of 10 (1 of which is special needs) & we have a 3rd child on the way & there's a 25% chance she'll have the same disability that our son has...thank heavens for birth control and sterilization surgeries...
i'm gettin'...fixed...after this one. my baby-makin' dayz be OVER!
anyways, i hear ya though & i'll just be parroting what everyone has already said...the economy SUCKS big time right now.
we're grateful for whatever we have though and we believe that something is better then nothing when it comes to jobs and income.

Sometimes it helps when you have people on the inside.

This is the honest to god truth! You can be more qualified but another person will get that job because they have the inside connection. I'm sorry you are dealing with all the BS. I totally understand (Laidoff in 2009) Just keep your head up and keep searching. Eventually that job will come around.

Sorry for the hard time finding employment. I can understand the feeling that you wasted time and money going to college, but you are still ahead of many out on the job search. Living in Michigan it is next to impossible to find work right now with or without a degree, but thought with out degrees have virtually no chance of finding work at all. The economy is going to get better, and when it does you will have the necessary knowledge to find a job that all thoughts without it won't. Please don't lose hope in your search. Sooner or later you will find the perfect employer for you. BTW I have a decent job, but am still going to school because I know that if something was to happen I need something to fall back on. Many individuals will still find themselves under qualified when jobs do come back because they chose not to go college.

Ugh I hear you. Although it's kind of narcissistic to think/say, just like you I went to school so I wouldn't have to work the crap jobs I have been working I feel like I deserve a decent job! I might just have to end up taking a part time job for awhile. Thank god the new health care plan allows me to keep my mom's insurance for a few more years!

Oh man, I wish you luck in your life! I keep hearing that with all the jobs getting put on hold or being let go right now it will all snowball eventually and there will be a huge demand for workers. We'll see...it's sounds nice.

I just got another email back about an assistant HR position. They said they were flattered that someone with my talents and education would apply but I was overqualified! Maybe I should just start leaving out the fact that I'm a college grad!

I spent the last few years doing nothing but research, using statistical data packages, reading code books, etc, but still I can't get a dang job as a secretary for a research group! I ALMOST got hired on with a pharmaceutical research group, but a couple weeks later the HR lady told me the position got put on hold and they would let me know when it was back up if I was still interested.

The only jobs hiring around here want a business degree, a financial degree, or a computer science degree. So if you are in the midwest and in school I suggest getting one of these degrees if you still have time to switch!

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that nowadays seem the only way to make it is either no people or start a business. Even then its still extremely hard. You will make it though just keep wanting and good things will come

yeah job market sucks I know of several people looking for work all the time.
I am personally disable and try to find odd jobs left and right to cover for things that disablity won't cover ( more to help support my snakes and to keep the white coats at bay) I get too antsy at times but i more less am a jack of all trades master of none. I learned a lot of stuff helping my grandfather when I was a kida and more able to get around.

Now a days it all I can do to make a landfill run for people( and then it take help at times) mostly stuffI do is for the eldery and limited other things for those lucky enough to own a summer place that local.
I personally don't see why any eldery person in their 60+ that unable to get around well trying to push their yard or try to move stuff that would prolly flatten them.. I am younger and can take the pain better and always done what I was told not too cause I hurt myself( lift riding mowers up carry heavy items like chairs and couchs, draga fridge to trailer for someone.

I learned to do it all but I won't crawl under a trailer ( I got a think about unknown spiders) and handle wild dead animals( specially if they smelling)

My wife has her degree in sociology and is currently working as a case manager in mental health.....She makes a whole $10 an hour and wishes she was still working at Walmart.....

I will be done with my B.S. in Early Childhood Education in December, and I'm HOPING and PRAYING that I find a job quickly!
