Are you sure his hide is small/snug enough?
It might be that he's seeking a more secure area to hide in. If the hide isn't small enough to touch him on all sides when he's inside it, it's probably too big for him.
Some of my bigger ones still wear their hides like hatsthey don't want bigger hides.
