    Quarantine

I'm trying my best to quarantine my new pickup from the rest of my collection, but I live in a one bedroom apartment. At the moment, I have my new snake separated in the living room. I also sterilize everything that will interact with both snakes. Is there anything else I can do? I'm worried it wont really matter consider how small my apartment is.

    Re: Quarantine

Haha, I agree, I am in the same situation and would really like to know. they're only separated by one room since the rest of the rooms(mates) are not snake friendly.

    Re: Quarantine

That is what I'll do then! I'm just paranoid after all the horror stories I've read. I just wanna do the best I can for the snakes. New girl seems to be quite adventurous though. She got out of her deli cup on the way home and nearly caused me to wreck on highway! I look over to see a big head and a long neck stretching towards me out of the cup! The bad news is, she had a bit of shed left on her head including her eye caps...

    i ALMOST pissed myself!

Well as long as you bought a quality snake, from a reputable person, then you wont have much to worry about. Just make sure they are all as far away from each other as possible and that you are very strict with your cleaning and handling procedures.

Glad your really thinking it through!

Spray Provent-a-Mite on the quarantine enclosure. (Not on the snake!) Mites are the big worry in close quarters, because they can walk. I even periodically go and PAM all the way around the doorway to my quarantine area, though it's probably only minimally helpful.

The other common problem (and even from good breeders) is intestinal protazoa (aka "flagellates"). These are commonly transferred when water bowls are cleaned, but not sanitized or given time to dry completely. Make sure you either keep completely separate water bowls, or soak the bowls in 10% bleach solution and let dry completely.

For respiratory infections and IBD and other parasites, the separate room is probably enough if you follow strict quarantine procedures.

THANK YOU!!!! I've been good about the water bowls and I wash them in separate areas. Any brick and mortar places that sell Provent-a-mite?

Yeah, but call around. The reptile specialty stores around here carry it, but not the general pet stores. Be prepared to spend a good $20-$30 on a can.

That is steep, but nothing compared to the agony of dealing with mites.
