I'm new here, and excited to learn about Ball pythons! I've always had a strange fascination with snakes and I'd like to get into the ball python realm. I'll be buying one in June. I want to research them THOROUGHLY before buying one.

Previous experiences with animals-

1 dog
3 Hamsters
2 Hermit crabs
2 Snakes(One was a milk snake, forgot the other)
I've handled lizards, turtles and alligators.

I love snakes Favorite creature ever.

First off welcome to Bp.net. Second you are going about this the right way by learning as much as you can about ball pythons before you buy one. This puts you a head of many people because they buy their snake then do research. If you have any questions just ask. Most of the people here are more than happy to help.

I figured it wouldn't be MUCH different from keeping a milksnake, which I've found it isn't. BPs can be a bit bigger and stronger and require different sized food, but I think I've found that they are similar enough I'd be comfortable having one.

I just don't know which one to get though
I have no idea where to ask either. I don't want a morph yet because of their cost. I want a cheaper one so I can learn with it. So normals seem to be the option. I'd like to keep the cost of the snake itself under 200 dollars, which seems reasonable for a normal. I have a 35 gallon aquarium, which I've read is acceptable. 35 gallons is much too big for a hatchling, so I'll be buying a smaller one to accommodate it's needs and then I can move it to the larger one.

I can't find a list of normal's colors though. Do they only have one color pattern? I'd like an all black one...

You have all my respect off of this first post! You said your getting a ball in June because you need time to research. THANK YOU! It's pretty sad when people make a 2 day decision to get a new animal, and end up caring for it wrong and eventually giving the snake a slow death. It's sad but its true, this happens all the time. Respect for getting the info you need before making a purchase.

As for the snake itself, 200 bucks is a lot to work with.
You could get a Normal, Pastel, Spider, who knows what else is going for that cheap. Cmon ball python pros.... help me out here

Why would someone make an impulsive decision like that?
It's common sense to know about something before you buy it.
Do you buy a car without researching it? I hope not.
I play tournament golf, going pro in a few years. I most certainly do NOT buy a golf club without EXTENSIVE research. Things cost money these days. I want to know what I'm buying and how to make it last!

Out of the ones I've seen, spiders are sooooooooo AWESOME! I love their patterns.
Would a spider pattern be ok for a newbie?

Welcome, most people don't do any research before they get a BP (I didn't)

This place is the second forum I found but it is the only one I use.

You should look into some reputable breeders like BHB or any of the breeders you see advertised here. You will also find there are many "Hobby" breeders like Bailey and Bailey that put out amazing animals, more beautiful than some that big name breeders put out.

So far Sable and Spider seem to be my favorites.
How much do Sables run on the cheaper end? They don't have the price on it.

Welcome to Bp.net below is a list of the mutations that you can get in that price range. When selecting your first animal you should ask yourself other questions as well.

Always look into what else a specific morph can offer.

1. Spider offers the best combos to date IMO. Bumblebee/ Lesserbee/ honeybee/ Queenbee. etc

2. Pastel very good gene to start of with co dom so it has a super form the Super pastel.. You also need a pastel for Bumblebee. endless combo possibilities.

3. Lesser co dom super form blue eyed lucy enough said The lesser is a bit higher than the $200.

4. Yellowbelly co dom super form Ivory amazing animal the Yellowbelly is also a hott combo maker.

5. Cinny or black pastel co dom super is a black snake very nice also. combos. Pewters/ cinny ghost/ black pastel albino/ sterlings.

This is just the main big boys in that price range look at what you like I decided my additions always taking into acct what else I can get from a fire for example it offers fireflys and black eyed leucistics.

1. Nooooo. I'd be an awful breeder. I'm just too young to have so many snakes.
2. Oh yesssss.
3. I have two things I do in life. Golf, and hang out with my girlfriend. And school sometimes I have a large enough house, proper money and equipment, a caring mom, and I'm VERY confident around reptiles.
