Question about feeding and foods, and behavior
Okay, so a couple days ago, I got a gargoyle gecko, and a leo, so I bought 1k mealies, 1k tiny supers, and a cup of 25 or so dubia roaches to start breeding. The leo is straight forward for me, so my questions obviously are about the garg.
When I got her, I mixed up some CGD real well in a bottle lid (about the size of a small prescription bottle lid) and gave that to her. I cleaned it out yesterday and mixed up some more, with less water than it says to (so it was thick), and only mixed enough to coat the bottom of the lid well. Over night, a little more than 2/3 of that was eaten, and while I was out for about 5 hours, a bit more has been licked up.
The garg is about 4 months or so, but I am unsure if she should have CGD at all times. Should I? Even when she's a full grown adult?
Also, when I first got her, I left 4 mealworms in a dish in case she didn't eat the CGD (because the store fed only crickets, even though the employee who got her for me made sure I knew about the CGD), and the mealies were completely untouched for two days. I'd like to get her eating some sort of insect as well because I know they and cresties are omnivores and grow better/faster when they have an insect to eat as well, and because I'd like to make sure she can eat the dubias that have just gotten too big for the leo (but too small for the rats if I lack any 4 wk olds) once I get my shipment to start breeding.
With insects, how often can those be fed? And how much of them with CGD? And should insects be dusted at all if I'm feeding CGD with them?
And another thing: I think I remember reading that gargs sometimes do not accept insects because they are small, and prefer slightly over-sized items. I can't remember exactly what this was about though, so could I get some insight?
And I'm also curious about what other foods gargs might eat besides CGD and insects, but I know wild ones eat actual plant matter. What can you get at the supermarket (like, say Walmart) that's okay for them? Just something I'd like to know.
Now for the last thing. The gargs and cresties are kept in enclosures right next to each other, and the 6 month old or so crestie they had (who would NOT settle down when I held it) was sitting on a wall every time I saw it, and only about half the gargs I've seen have done that. My girl seems to prefer to hang out under a fake plant on the FLOOR of her tub, and she also seems to be a really really bad climber for a supposed (semi) arboreal species. She doesn't seem to cling very well to anything (from the smooth surface of my laptop screen to my unshaven arm) except for the fish plant decoration type thing in the store and paper towels.
This a normal thing for some gargs? I can feel the stickiness of her tailtip and feet (though it's definitely not super sticky like the crestie was), but she's a horrible climber and just seems to prefer the floor. She also jumps sometimes from my grasp (during the very short daily holds to make sure nothing's going on), and if I'm not being careful, she gets pretty close to falling off wherever she landed, which I wouldn't expect since I can feel the pads.
