Like Deborah said, the youngsters are usually the ones that mess things up. They are terrible killers/eaters compared to adults. I hate how long it takes them to kill the little ratties! They will get much more efficient with age (usually). It is a little scary when they eat backwards and it takes forever, so I understand your concern. After my female laid and I started feeding her again (she stopped from February to July) the second time I fed her she didn't even constrict the live rat, she just started eating it! I was freaking out! It was a young rat because I didn't want to shock her system so it didn't have a lot of strength to hurt her thank heavens. She did realize it was still alive after she had it's head completely in her mouth, she let go, and constricted it. It was crazy! After that, I'm not sure anything will scare me, they know what to do whether it takes them a few seconds or a several minutes to realize it.
