Is a 60 quart tub too big for an adult BP?

I'm going to get that 60 quart tub then. I'll get all the supplies I need this week and get it all set up over the weekend. Not sure exactly when I'm going to get the BP yet, but I want to make sure I get the humidity and temps the way I want it in there before getting him/her. I have some flexwatt heattape that I bought at a show I attended a while back. Will covering half the bottom be enough for the whole tub you think? I'll have to mess around with it to get it just right, but just curious about your opinions on that. Want to make sure the side that the flexwatt isn't under (cool side) will still be warm enough on its own. Thanks again for all your help.

When I set-up an enclosure I size my heat sources to cover at least 1/3 of the floorspace but not more than 1/2. That's just my preference. My 60qt tub has a 11 X 17 UTH under it so about half is covered. One of the biggest factors that affects the cool side temps is the ambient temp of the room itself. Since I use a space heater in my herp room to keep the temp at 80F, the cool temps in my tubs normally varies between 78-82. I've never used Flexwatt, so I don't know the specifics about cutting and sizing it and this may or may not be an option, but I was thinking you could start off with about 2/3 of the floorspace covered and monitor the temps for a day or so. If it's too much, then trim it down a little bit at a time until you get the desired temps...

I just saw a 74 quart tub at Target. I believe the dimensions are 44" X 18" X 6". Would this one be too big? Just asking because this would give him more room, but I wonder how difficult it would be to keep the temps where I'd want them to be?

Plus, how important is it for the UTH to cover almost every square inch of the area it is heating? What I mean by that is, I have the flexwatt that is 11 inches wide. If I put it underneath longways, there will be about 3 or 4 inches on the sides that it won't be heating if I go with a tub that's 18 inches wide. If I turn it a different way, it covers those areas, but will only heat 11 inches of the 34 inches across (if I go with the 60 quart). Not sure if that makes any sense how I'm explaining it. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Well, I don't think the 74 quart would be too big, but I think the 60 quart would be perfectly fine and, like you said, easier to control temps and humidity. Ultimately it's your decision though.

Also, I'm not sure I can completely visualize what you're saying with the flexwatt (and I don't have any experience with it myself), but I'd say if you get the 60 quart and turn it the way you were describing so that it would cover 11 of the 34 inches, that would be great since that would be pretty much a third of the bottom. And then, like Vypyrz said, you could always trim it down to get the temps you need. The entire flexwatt doesn't need to be in contact with the bottom of the tub, if that's what you're asking... just however you can get it to cover more or less 1/3 of the bottom.
